This October, when it came time to change the casts on his legs, nine-year-old Mason Sajder asked for something a little different.
Inspired by the pink socks and wrist bands his brother’s football team wears to support breast cancer awareness, Mason, requested bright pink wraps for his casts, with a plan to raise money for the disease. Mason set a goal to raise $100 for the Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation and asked everyone who wanted to sign his cast to make a donation.
Mason was born with Sjogren-Larsson Syndrome or SLS, a rare genetic condition that, among other symptoms, requires that he wear leg braces for support and stability. Every time Mason outgrows his braces, he has to wear a series of casts on his legs to prepare his feet for the new braces.
Thanks to word-of-mouth and a plea to friends and family over Facebook, he exceeded his goal, collecting a total of $343.55 to support the purchase of advanced equipment used in breast cancer detection and research for the CIBC Breast Assessment Centre.
Way to go Mason!
