The Dofasco Heart Investigation Unit

The Dofasco Heart Investigation Unit is the busiest such center in all of Ontario, performing over 10,000 procedures per year. This Unit consists of four state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories and a 32-bed recovery and reception area. A variety of minimally-invasive cardiac interventions are performed in the Unit.

Patients who are having an acute heart attack are brought to the Heart Investigation Unit from referring centers across the region 24 hours a day seven days a week. These patients are brought by ambulance directly to Hamilton General Hospital, bypassing other hospitals, ensuring faster "door-to-balloon" times (time from patient arrival to restoration of blood flow to the heart from an angioplasty) and a better survival rate.
