The Dofasco Heart Investigation Unit is the busiest such center in all of Ontario, performing over 10,000 procedures per year. This Unit consists of four state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories and a 32-bed recovery and reception area. A variety of minimally-invasive cardiac interventions are performed in the Unit.Patients who are having an acute heart attack are brought to the Heart Investigation Unit from referring centers across the region 24 hours a day seven days a week. These patients are brought by ambulance directly to Hamilton General Hospital, bypassing other hospitals, ensuring faster "door-to-balloon" times (time from patient arrival to restoration of blood flow to the heart from an angioplasty) and a better survival rate.
