Dunnville Girl, A True Champion

In 2003, Emily, a sweet and fun-loving three year-old girl, was experiencing severe joint pain. Her concerned parents took her to Mac Kids where she was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Early in her treatment she was hospitalized because of the fever and unbearable pain. Emily began taking a myriad of medications and injections that resulted in severe swelling, stunted growth and even teasing at school.

In December 2010, there was finally a light at the end of the tunnel; Emily was prescribed a new drug typically used to treat adults. Since taking this new medication, her pain has been significantly reduced and she has been weaned off other medications that were the cause of so many negative side effects.

Today, Emily visits Mac Kids every two weeks to receive medication through a port in her chest. Even on days where she can do very little, she spends time designing beaded bracelets appropriately named “Emm’s Circle of Strength” and teaches other kids about the disease.

This little girl is a cheerful champion and an inspiration to all. That is why Emily was chosen to represent Mac Kids as the 2011 patient ambassador for the Champions presented by Walmart program. Officially announced today during a ceremony at Mac Kids, 80 Walmart employees had the opportunity to meet Emily in person as she shared her story with the group. For one day only on September 15, Emily’s bracelets will be available for a donation at three Hamilton-area Walmart locations: Rymal Road, Upper James, and Centennial Parkway.

The Champions program presented by Walmart is a Children’s Miracle Network initiative. In October, Emily and her family will attend festivities in Ottawa along with the other Canadian champions who are acting as ambassadors for their hospitals. Emily and her family will then travel to Disney World in Orlando with the Champions from across North America.
