Susan Kruszynski enjoys bringing her mom Sadie lemon cake when she visits her at St. Peter’s Hospital. She enjoys the time they spend together although it is bitter-sweet for Susan as her mom Sadie doesn’t remember who she is.
Ten years ago, Sadie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Susan reflects back to the incidents which were completely out of character for her mom and which first alerted to Sadie’s family that something was different. As the disease progressed and her safety became a concern, Sadie’s family made the difficult decision to let someone else take care of her.
Today, St. Peter’s Hospital is Sadie’s home and Susan is thankful that a place like St. Peter’s exists.
St. Peter’s staff make it their mission to enhance the lives of individuals with an illness such as Alzheimer’s. They take the time to get to know the person behind the illness so that all of their needs – physical, emotional and spiritual – can be tended to.
Every time she visits, Susan is amazed by the compassionate and considerate care that staff, physicians and volunteers take with her mom. Susan knows that her mom’s safety and well-being is a priority and can take comfort in knowing that she is always in capable hands.
While Sadie is very different today, Susan’s love and respect for her mom will never fade.
