Coping with Alzheimer's Disease - Ken's Story

 

At age 82, Ken has already lived a rich life full of travel, work and family. But, in January 2009, Ken was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and his family had to cope with knowing that aspects of the man they knew were slipping away.
Born in Bombay, India, Ken has lived an eventful life. He played soccer and field hockey at a competitive level, then met the love of his life, Connie, and they married and had four children. Ken and his family immigrated to Canada in 1967 where he worked in the manufacturing industry for most of his professional career as a mechanical engineer finally retiring in 1990.  

Restoring Health and Hope at St. Peter's

At this festive time of year, we often hear that good health is the best gift of all. Jack Walton and Pat, his devoted wife of 39 years, know this better than most. For the past eight years, Jack has fought valiantly to regain his health after suffering a massive heart attack at age 51.

Making Spirits Bright at the Festival of Lights

Donors, staff and friends of St. Peter’s Hospital celebrated the start of the holiday season at the Festival of Lights held December 5 in the Garwood Jones Auditorium.

The Festival of Lights is a cherished annual event at St. Peter’s Hospital. In keeping with tradition, Pearl Veenema, President and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation and Charlie Collura, Chair of St. Peter’s Hospital Foundation, officially opened the event by flipping the switch to reveal a festive lighting display in the courtyard.

A Family Finds Care, Comfort and Compassion on St. Peter’s Palliative Care Unit

The Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale, which rates the impact of 43 life events on health,  ranks the death of a spouse as the most stressful life event.  That was certainly the case for Nancy Carroll.  On July 21, 2006, her beloved husband of 11 years passed away in the Palliative Care Unit at St. Peter’s Hospital.

HELP – Enhancing Care for Older Adults in our Hospitals

As the home to the largest senior’s population in the province, it is important that we maintain leadership in developing programs and tools to assist with the specialized needs of senior patients in an acute caresetting. One such program is entitled “HELP” Hospital Elder Life Program and Hamilton Health Sciences has been designated as the first international “HELP Centre of Excellence”.

Finding Hope and Happiness at St. Peter's

Wesley Fudge enjoys the freedom of being able to wander throughout St. Peter’s Hospital without being confined to a patient room. He stays busy with visits from family, attending hospital events, and as a member of the St. Peter’s Therapeutic Recreation Services “Guy’s Club”, a social club for men who are patients at St. Peter’s Hospital.

A Look at Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. This weakening in the bones can leave a person at a much greater risk for fracturing a wrist, shoulder or hip after a fall. One in four women over the age of 50 have osteoporosis and at least one in eight men over 50 also has the disease, however, it can strike at any age.
