About Starward Community Care Foundation

At Starward, we believe a strong community is more than just building homes, it’s about supporting the people in our community in a myriad of ways that creates safety and security, that gives people access to health and education that creates an environment of inspiration leading to innovation and growth.

As such, in early 2023 the Starward Community Care Foundation was launched and has partnered with like-minded local organizations in a shared goal to support the needs of women and children in our community.

We are thrilled to partner with McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation, part of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation as one of our charities of choice to support the McMaster University Medical Centre Midwifery Care Unit (MCU), to benefit women and children during the childbirth process.

About the Midwifery Care Unit

Starward Community Homes - Inflatable PoolHamilton Health Sciences (HHS) recently welcomed the Midwifery Care Unit (MCU) last spring and, while still in the early stages of development, the four-room MCU, down the hall from labour and delivery, is one of the first of its kind in Canada.

“Its services are for community midwifery clients whose births are considered low risk because complications are unlikely,” says Lisa Sabatino, interim deputy chief of midwifery in the HHS obstetrics and gynecology department.

Hamilton’s MCU includes three birthing rooms and a recovery room where clients can stay for post-partum care after delivering their babies. The MCU is ideal for people who want to give birth in hospital, but in a more home-like setting with their community midwife.

Grateful Family Story

Starward Community Homes - Midwifery UnitHamilton residents Dalya and Waheed Ahmadi’s son Mohammad was born in the MCU last fall. “The facilities and teams were excellent,” says Waheed.

Dalya described her experience in the MCU as “wonderful.”

“I just wanted to say thank you to everyone, and especially my midwives for their assistance, care and kindness. It was a very supportive experience throughout.”
