"I find myself fortunate to be in this position to assist and support my patients on their journey.”
It takes a special person to be a nurse. They’re some of the true heroes and heroines at Hamilton Health Sciences, giving selflessly every day in service of those in need. Nursing is a profession that requires specialized training, empathy, compassion and endless amounts of energy.
For National Nurses Week (May 9-15), we’re highlighting the amazing work done by nurses at the Hamilton Health Sciences sites.
One such person is Susan Banahan, a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) who works in the Restorative Care Program at St. Peter’s Hospital. In June 2022, she’ll celebrate 10 years of working with Hamilton Health Sciences.
Susan’s workday begins at 7:00 am and she works 12-hour shifts in unit 2W.
“It’s a very busy unit, mostly caring for those who have suffered strokes and falls, as well as patients with various health issues that result in deconditioning,” explains Susan. “They’re here to recover, and regain their strength and independence.”
A typical day finds Susan assisting with washing, dressing and toileting, followed by medication administration. Other duties include wound care, venipuncture, updating care plans, liaising with interdisciplinary teams and charting developments.
“Even though the days are enormously busy, I always feel fulfilled and content at the end of my day knowing that I’ve had a positive effect on my patients,” says Susan. “It’s especially rewarding to see patients work hard to become strong and ambulatory, and have the opportunity to return home to their families.”
Making a genuine connection with patients is extremely important to Susan.
“My favourite part of my work is building therapeutic relationships and trust. I love to hear about patients’ personal histories and families. Knowing more about my patients enables me to help them achieve their goals and best outcomes. I find myself fortunate to be in this position to assist and support my patients on their journey.”
Thank you to nurses like Susan across Hamilton Health Sciences for their continued commitment and tireless efforts.
