During the first wave of the pandemic in 2020, three women undertook an amazing effort to support the COVID-19 response at Hamilton General Hospital. The fruits of their efforts continue to benefit patients today.

Lubna Sartawi, Lina El-Ali and Hanan Al-Hamas wanted to support frontline workers at The General.

“Realizing how COVID was affecting everyone, not just people in the Muslim community, we wanted to give back and help those in need – especially during Ramadan, the month of giving for Muslims,” says Lubna Sartawi, Vice President of the Muslim Association of Hamilton.

Making a difference

Hanan, a Registered Nurse at The General, suggested raising money for Hamilton General Hospital Foundation to support the purchase of vital signs monitors and IV pumps.

“The Muslim Association of Hamilton reached out to members of the Muslim community and raised $10,000 in donations to support this effort,” explains Hanan.

Then the Association matched the $10,000, bringing their total donation to $20,000. In turn, the Gulshan & Pyarali G. Nanji Family Foundation matched the $20,000 as part of their commitment to match all donations up to $100,000 in support of the COVID-19 response at The General.

“We are honoured to support health care workers during the COVID crisis,” says Lina.
